Designing for Democracy: A 3rd Century Mall
Wednesday, December 07, 2005 at 7:00PM
The Mall is a mess and getting messier.
Andrew Ferguson, The Weekly Standard
At a dynamic event, distinguished architects and historians W. Kent Cooper, Arthur Cotton Moore, Don Hawkins, and Richard Longstreth, joined by architects and designers from local firms present sketches and design concepts for a seamless expansion of The National Mall. The Mall, throughout history, has expanded and evolved, and it could expand again to meet cultural and civic needs of the 21st century, a concept recently championed by The Washington Post and The Weekly Standard. It has outgrown its grand first and second century plans, the 1791 L'Enfant Plan and the 1901-02 McMillan Plan, and in the 20th century it took on new character, becoming a people's place and stage for our democracy. The third century Mall needs a vision to encompass this idea, addressed on this exciting evening. It begins with a review of the Mall's historic plans and development, narrated by Judy Scott Feldman, Chair of the National Coalition to Save Our Mall. Audience participation is encouraged.
